RAYMORE, MO (Aug. 2, 2026) – Raymore has lost a devoted leader with the passing of Tom Engert,  Raymore City Councilmember for Ward 4, late Saturday, Aug. 1. 

Mr. Engert spent his life in service to others, beginning his law enforcement career in 1974 as a dispatcher and reserve officer for the Kansas City Police Department, then served as a Grandview police officer from October 1978 to September 2000, spending much of that time as a D.A.R.E officer. After retiring from the force, he spent a decade in the investigations unit at Sprint, and even after that retirement, continued teaching as an instructor at MCC-Blue River’s Public Safety Institute.

Tom’s commitment to public service never stopped. Long after hanging up his badge, he continued showing up for his neighbors, his city and the people he cared about.

Whether in uniform or not, Tom gave generously of his time and heart, and this community is better for it. We are forever grateful for the years he gave us.

Tom was first elected to the Raymore City Council in 2023, bringing with him years of hands-on experience working on behalf of this community, including serving on our Planning and Zoning Commission from January 2021, until his City Council election. He was also a proud former president of the Morningview HOA, caring for his neighborhood in ways both big and small, and I had the privilege of serving alongside Tom on the Cass County Emergency Services Board.

Tom will be remembered not only for his public service, but for the warmth and dedication he brought to everything he did. 

On behalf of the City of Raymore and the members of the City Council, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Candy, his family and friends and all those who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. He will be deeply missed.

I am issuing a proclamation ordering that the flag of the United States be flown at half staff on all facilities owned by the City of Raymore from sunrise Monday, Aug. 3, through sunset Tuesday, Aug, 4, 2026, in recognition of Mr. Engert’s contributions to the community and to express our condolences to his loved ones. 

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the flag of the United States symbolizes our shared values, freedom, resilience, and service; and,

WHEREAS, City Council Member Tom Engert has departed this life, leaving behind a profound legacy of dedicated public service and commitment to the City of Raymore and the community and county; and,

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the community pause to recognize his contributions and express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

NOW, THEREFORE, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Raymore, Missouri, I do hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff on all facilities owned and operated by the City of Raymore, including City Hall, beginning at sunrise on Monday, August 3, 2026, and continuing until sunset on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
