UPDATE (May 26, 2026) – The algal bloom in the creek has dissipated as of today, May 26. An environmental program analyst from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) Water Protection Program recommends people and pets stay out of the water for an additional 14 days, which would be until June 9.
Cyanobacteria was detected in the creek May 24. While its presence doesn’t mean toxins are definitely in the water, it’s a good idea to take a few simple precautions until conditions change.
With pets: Dogs are especially prone to exposure since they tend to swim with their faces in the water and may swallow water while swimming. If you notice that a pet has gotten in the water, MoDNR recommends rinsing them off with clean water immediately to remove any algae from their fur before they can lick it off. Watch for signs like weakness, dizziness, vomiting, etc. If you notice those symptoms, you should take the pet to the vet immediately.
Harmful Algal Blooms are a natural occurrence but happen more often when there are excess nutrients in the water from the atmosphere, decomposition and runoff from the watershed during precipitation. Lawn fertilizers can be a significant contributor.

RAYMORE, MO (Sunday, May 24, 2026) – An apparent algae bloom originating from a nearby private pond entered the creek in the Moon Valley subdivision that runs between Birchwood Drive and Oak Drive and continues through the southern wooded areas of Moon Valley Park and Recreation Park.
Out of an abundance of caution, we are advising residents to keep pets away from the creek and prevent them from drinking the water until testing can be completed early this week.
While there is no confirmed risk at this time, some algae blooms can produce toxins that may be harmful to animals. We will share results as soon as they are available.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to confirm the creek water’s safety.
