RAYMORE, MO – Beware of the latest in a long list of ways criminals are scamming people: scammers are impersonating bankers or are impersonating law enforcement claiming either money has been accidentally deposited into your bank or it's been stolen from your bank and they've found it, but the hook is always that the victim needs to make payments first before they can get that money issue fixed.
- First, don't feel obligated to answer calls from numbers you don't know.
-
If someone claims to be from your bank and is contacting you with a problem with your account, hang up and call the actual phone number for your bank. Verify the legitimacy of the issue that way.
-
NEVER give personal information over the phone.
-
A big red flag is the urgent request to send money to correct the problem.
- Nobody from a law enforcement agency is EVER going to ask you to send money over the phone. EVER. Don't fall for it.
If you do find yourself on the phone in one of these situations and anything sounds off at all, hang up. Don't hesitate to contact us at the department at 816-331-0530. It's better to be sure something is legitimate than to lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars to a scammer.
Remember that scammers can be very convincing– they've had a lot of practice and they can certainly make themselves sound believable and people all over fall for it every single day.
