RAYMORE, MO (Jan. 21, 2026) – The coldest temperatures of the winter season so far will arrive Friday, Jan. 23, with high temperatures in the teens for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Wind chills of -10° to -25° Fahrenheit possible. This system will also bring anywhere from four to seven inches of snow from Friday evening through early Sunday. Raymore Public Works is prepared to work around the clock this weekend on snow removal operations.
Here are some tips to prepare for the weather:
-
Avoid travel if at all possible. If driving, drive slower and allow yourself extra time.
-
If you do drive, have at least half a tank of gas. Have some emergency items in your car in the event you get stuck or stranded and need to wait for assistance like extra warm clothes, water and snacks, blankets, jumper cables, extra phone charger, ice scraper, snow shovel, snow brush.
-
If you need to be outside, take frequent breaks inside. Dress in several layers and look out for signs of frostbite and hypothermia, including numbness, tingling, skin discoloration, blistering.
-
Drink lots of water, which is just as important on a really cold day as it is on a really hot day.
-
Be mindful of the windchill, which is a better representation of what your body is experiencing than just the air temperature.
-
Check on loved ones who may need extra assistance or attention, including the elderly, family, friends, neighbors, those with access and functional needs and animals and pets.
-
Protect your pets and livestock and make sure they have adequate shelter, food and water that is not frozen.
-
When shoveling snow, take frequent breaks inside and avoid overexerting yourself.
-
Should you lose power at home: Dress in layers and use towels or blankets to cover any drafts from windows or doors. Also, avoid using any unsafe methods of heating your home such as running your oven or using a generator indoors.
-
Make checking the weather forecast part of your regular routine so you know what to expect.
- Prevent frozen water pipes:
- Make sure the cover of the water meter pit is closed securely.
- Open cabinet doors under your sinks to get warm air circulating around those pipes, especially if your sink is located on an outer wall.
- Keep a trickle of cold water running through your faucet. The trickle should be a steady but small stream about the size of the lead in a pencil. Allowing the faucet to be on prevents pressure from building up in the system, which is the cause of burst pipes.
- Know where the main shut-off valve is located in your house in case of an emergency.
- If a pipe freezes, never use an open flame to thaw it. Use a hair dryer, light bulb or heat tape. When in doubt, call a plumber.
