RAYMORE, MO – Raymore Police are warning residents about scammers who are impersonating members of local law enforcement and demanding payment over the phone. Scammers will call a victim pretending to be a member of local law enforcement. They say you missed jury duty or there's a warrant out for your arrest unless you pay immediately. Often, the scammer says Bitcoin or gift cards must be purchased to keep you out of jail. Don't fall for it!
Raymore Police Chief Jim Wilson says law enforcement agencies will never ask for payment of any kind over the phone and they certainly do not take any sort of cryptocurrency or gift cards as payment.
Don't answer calls from unknown numbers. If you do get a scam call, know that scammers are very smooth and savvy. If you are unsure of a situation, call the source! Think you might have actually missed jury duty? Call your county to check. Think that really could be your niece or nephew or grandchild calling from jail asking for bail? Call the actual police department to check instead of providing personal information over the phone.
Don't hesitate to call Raymore Police if you're a victim of a scam or if you are unsure of something is a scam. Raymore Police are available 24/7 at 816-331-0530.
