Gov. Parson vetoes landfill health, safety and welfare study

Post Date:06/30/2023 5:13 PM
Jefferson City, MO- June 30, 2023: Today, Gov. Mike Parson vetoed section 19.401 of House Bill 19, which was the specific amendment to the budget bill that would have directed the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to conduct a health, safety and welfare study for one year in the specific region of the Cass County and Jackson County border and provide that no permit to operate a solid waste processing facility or solid waste disposal area of a solid waste management system would be processed during the study.

Gov. Parson vetoed the $100,000 study allocation, along with more than 65 other items within the bill, stating in part, “I have vetoed this provision in an effort to help ensure the financial stability of Missouri beyond my Administration and the current General Assembly. Further, this is a local responsibility with minimal statewide impact.”

While we are incredibly disappointed in Gov. Parson’s decision, it does not mean our fight has ended. The City of Raymore continues to pursue multiple avenues in addressing this multi-generational threat to our region, and will continue to work on behalf of our residents and the entire regional community to prevent a landfill from being located among tens of thousands of people, creating a public health, safety and welfare catastrophe.
