The City of Raymore, along with nearly every community in the KC Metro area, has been experiencing a similar fraudulent telephone scam. Minor details may change from case to case, but it basically involves a suspect calling citizens at random, claiming to be from a public utility company (usually the city water department). The suspect tells the citizen that there was a problem with their last payment (usually that their check was received but not signed). The suspect informs them that their service will be shut off, or there will be further problems, unless the citizen provides their credit or debit card number over the phone to “take care of the payment.” The scam is meant to create panic, so that the victim will give out the information. While some citizens have not given the information over the phone, the suspects are usually very convincing, and some victims have been defrauded.
Please be aware that the City of Raymore Water Department will never call you to solicit payment over the telephone. If any calls you receive are questionable, never provide any information over the telephone unless you can positively verify who the person is. The easiest way to do this is to ask the person’s name, and tell them you will call them back at the main phone number. For the City of Raymore, that number is (816)331-0488.
If you believe you have been a victim of this scam, and have provided your credit or debit card information over the phone, resulting in fraudulent activity on your account, please call the Raymore Police Department at (816)331-0530.
