More than 120 people representing 17 police and fire departments in Cass County attended the 21st Annual Law Enforcement Recognition Banquet at Elks Lodge 2791 in Harrisonville, Mo.

Chief Jan Zimmerman nominated Capt. Jim Wilson as officer of the year because of his drive to go above and beyond with community outreach efforts- particularly with the department’s Shop with a Cop program.

"It's not usually the chief who takes and idea and makes it reality. When I came back with the idea of having our own Shop with a Cop program, he took that idea and made it even better than I could have imagined," Zimmerman said.

Wilson had been participating with the Shop with a Cop program with the Harrisonville Police for several years and was happy to bring it to Raymore in 2016, taking 10 area children shopping just before the holidays.

With the second annual Shop with a Cop event last December, Wilson organized an entire evening of activities around the event. Raymore officers took 30 area children shopping for gifts at Walmart and hosted their families at Centerview for the evening with pizza, dessert and live music.

Shop with a Cop is made possible in part by a generous grant from Walmart, along with support of people and businesses in Raymore.

Capt. Wilson is already planning the December 2018 Shop with a Cop event and is excited to see it grow each year.
